Kingston Hub is a student-led group offering practical volunteering, skilled placements, project incubation and events. We support you to skill up and make a difference by learning about issues, connecting you with each other to tackle social problems. Together, we have the power and potential to shape a better world.
Schools Plus, our flagship tutoring programme, is a national Student Hubs programme. It aims to tackle educational disadvantage by sending University students to schools, community clubs and libraries across London which are in need of extra support. You get the choice of what type of project and subject you would like to tutor in. Examples of these types of placements in action are supporting a primary school teacher in their science lesson (teacher-led project), planning and leading your own lesson for secondary school or A-level students (tutor-led), or supporting a group of students with their homework at an after-school club.

Information About Schools Plus
We aim to support students to create positive social change in their communities. In order to share and improve how we do this, we are committed to measuring our impact. Last year Kingston Hub trained 1063 students, had 897 students take part in programmes and launched 3 new projects.
Our Mission
Student Hubs started back in 2007 with four individuals setting up Oxford Hub in order to connect like-minded students with each other and with opportunities to take action. They soon realised that there were too few opportunities for students to get involved with, so Oxford Hub started supporting students to set up their own volunteering projects.
The immense success Oxford Hub enjoyed led to the creation of Student Hubs, a national charity, and the development of Hubs at other universities. Over the years Hubs have been created in 9 other universities. 2014 saw the launch of the 10th and newest Hub at Kingston University! Over the past 6 years our vision at Kingston Hub is a student body which engages with social and community challenges throughout their time at university and further into their careers. Kingston Hub's mission is to support students to become active citizens and to achieve positive change both now and in the future.
We are dedicated to providing multiple opportunities and the support to engage with the local community in areas that you believe in most.
History
How To
Get Involved
Communication, empathy, dedication, safeguarding, leadership, working with children with complex needs, pastoral support of children, flexibility, time management and school liaison are all skills you will gain by taking part in Schools Plus. This volunteering opportunity is excellent for anyone who wants to experience working in a school environment or is exploring a career in education/youth work.
The next steps:
-
Fill in Application Form telling us why you would like to be involved.
-
Complete 1 hour selection workshop where you will have a chance to ask questions and confirm your project.
-
Complete interactive online training in safeguarding.
-
Spend 1 session per week from November until Christmas break (6 weeks period) making an impact, developing skills and experience, meeting new people and having fun! You can continue your journey into the second term if you wish!
-
Receive a certificate of participation at the end of the programme.
We expect at least one term of volunteering, which typically involves 1-2 hours a week of volunteering with an induction before your placement starts. Most volunteers continue into semester two, although you may choose to swap placement to a different school or location in the second semester.
Email ewelina@kingstonhub.org who will be able to answer any questions and direct you for any further help and support.
Due to an ongoing COVID-19 pandemic we have temporarily moved Schools Plus online. In 2020/21 academic year you will have a chance to volunteer in one of the activities:
-
Online Tutoring - Working with a pupil to weekly deliver 1-2 sessions online in a form of after-school club. The sessions would take place after classes and you will be matched with a young person depending on your schedule and interests. Depending on availibility, you can tutor in English, Science, History, Modern Languages, Psychology and many more!
-
Creating educational resources to support learning at home - creating short videos, worksheets and/or presentations. The idea is to make these resources fun, motivational and inspirational rather than strictly educating. We successfully ran very similar project during the summer to support young people's learning outcomes and mental health during challenging times. The projects we run this year are in: Science, History, Geography, Modern Languages and Culture (no language knowledge is required - only passion for the culture!) and Literacy Skills.
